Are you trying to cut back on how much sugar you eat? Eating too much sugar can lead to…
- Weight gain
- Heart disease
- High cholesterol
- Insulin resistance/diabetes
- Dementia/Alzheimer’s disease
Sugar cravings are not pleasant, and make it that much harder to stop eating so much. It’s a favorite topic of mine, though, because it’s a problem I used to deal with – that’s right, USED TO. I once thought craving sugar was something I would have to live with, but I realized that it was a sign I wasn’t eating to meet the needs of my body. I can be around a box of donuts and not want to eat 1 (or more)…but that wasn’t always the case.
Often, there’s a desire to cut out sugar in order to gain control. While it’s great in theory, the reality is that cutting out sugar is HARD. I’ve faced this struggle – battling cravings, trying to limit my intake, only to find myself back where I started. Has that happened to you?
A common place to cut out sugar is in your coffee. You go from drinking this delightful, sweet coffee to…black blah bitterness.
There are 2 things I want you to know:
- You don’t have to completely give up sugar.
- You don’t have to drink black coffee.
You can still enjoy your favorite cup of coffee without feeling guilty.
Not all sugar is going to harm you. In fact, sugar (glucose) is the preferred source of energy for the brain.
A typical cup of coffee at home is made by adding creamer and sugar. A typical French vanilla creamer from the fridge at the store will be made with water, sugar, vegetable oil, thickeners, and preservatives. Yes, creamer already has sugar in it, along with a variety of extra ingredients you don’t need.
You can make your own coffee creamer in under 5 minutes, still enjoy a delicious cup of coffee, and be in control of your ingredients. The best part? It tastes like vanilla ice cream.

Homemade Coffee Creamer
Ingredients:
- 1 can of sweetened condensed milk
- 2 cups of milk of choice
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
Directions:
- Stir together all ingredients. It’s as easy as that!
- Note: Your homemade creamer will expire based on the expiration of your milk. I recommend splitting it into multiple containers, storing 1 in the fridge to use now and the rest in the freezer to thaw as needed.
